Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is on a two-day visit to Kashmir, attended the function to lay the foundation stone for the of the "Z-Morh Tunnel" on the Srinagar-Leh section of National Highway (NH)-1, which aims to provide all-weather connectivity with Ladakh. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways C.P. Joshi laid the foundation stone.
During his visit to Kashmir last year, people of Ladak had complained him about the roads getting blocked during the winter causing great difficulties. Rahul Gandhi had then promised them that he would try his level best to find out a solution and the present tunnel is the result of his initiative.

“Gujarat’s development is the vision of Congress. We will have to make a new Gujarat by protecting the rich culture and tradition of the state", said Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while launching the Congress campaign in Gujarat. “ Let our opponents do whatever they want, but we have to build a new Gujarat and we will accomplish our goal” said Sonia Gandhi. “Let us take a pledge from this sacred land of Saurashtra to build a new Gujarat” said Sonia Gandhi.

on Wednesday urged the supporters to work together to build a new Gujarat while
keeping its traditions intact.
Addressing a massive rally of farmers in Rajkot Sonia Gandhi
posed several questions to the state government for the woes of the
underprivileged in the state and made a fervent appeal to help the Congress in
building a 'new Gujarat'. The Congress President said that Congress was behind
the state's enviable growth in industries, petrochemicals and textiles and even
now the UPA government had given to Gujarat 50 per cent more funds for its
development than the then BJP-led NDA government at the centre. "Our
opponents can't see this development and speak negatively and hence the people
are not able to realize the truth” she added.
Giving an example, Sonia Gandhi said that the Sardar Sarovar
Narmada Scheme was devised by Congress leaders and named after Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel, the brave son of
Gujarat. But under the BJP rule, the Narmada waters had still not
reached the people of Saurashtra. Sonia said: "The farmers here are
suffering due to lack of water. I want to ask as to why the Narmada water has
not reached the farmers of Saurashtra in the last 10 years."
The UPA Chairperson blasted the BJP for disrupting
parliament proceedings saying "they are not against corruption but they
are against us". Sonia also defended the recent hike in diesel prices
saying that the Centre procured 80 per cent of crude oil from abroad and its
price had risen from $32 per barrel during the NDA rule in 2004 to $140 now.
"Therefore, whenever international prices go up, we have to bear it
resulting in hike in petroleum products", she explained but went on to
point out that the rate of value-added tax was the highest in Gujarat”.
The Congress president said that the UPA government had
given rights to poor tribals to acquire land but in Gujarat this right was not
given. Referring to the recent death of three Dalits in police fiiring in
Saurashtra, Sonia also said that Dalits got bullets when they sought justice
and Babasaheb Ambedkar's ideals were insulted. She spoke about the plight of
farmers and women and blamed the Gujarat government for its failure to appoint
the lokayukta.

Rahul Gandhi, a leader committed to deliver what he promised
When Rahul Gandhi,
the Congress General Secretary, had visited Kashmir last year, he had promised
the students that he would bring some top industrialists to Srinagar so that
they can have interaction with them directly. Further he has promised that he
would make all his possible efforts for a tunnel in Sonamarg that will connect
Kashmir with Ladakh Srinagar.
Now he has kept both his promises. Five top industrialists
will fly to Srinagar on Friday, as part of a Rahul Gandhi-driven initiative and
they would listen to Kashmir University students to get a firsthand feel of the
ground situation and then work on what they can do to create employment
opportunities in the State. The industrialists include Ratan Tata, Kumar
Mangalam Birla, Rajiv Bajaj and Deepak Parekh. Further he also will attend the
funtio0n to lay the foundation stone for the tunnel he had promised.
“This is a completely new initiative for Jammu and Kashmir,”
says a Congress leader in the state. “Rahulji is keeping the promise he made to
Kashmir University students he met last year in September. The students, had
complained about the lack of industry and jobs, and Mr. Gandhi assured them
that he would bring some top businessmen to Srinagar so that they could
interact with them directly” he adds.
After a meeting with students of the university, scheduled
for 10.30 a.m. on Friday, the industrialists will meet members of the local
Chambers of Commerce to discuss the possibilities of investment in the area.
Rahul Gandhi would be present during the meeting with the students, Congress
sources said.
Rahul Gandhi will arrive in the Kashmir Valley on Thursday
on a two- day visit. On his agenda is a meeting at the Sher-i-Kashmir
International Conference Centre with panchayat members in the Valley on Friday:
this follows his call to increase security for sarpanches who were facing
threats from militants, and a meeting with a delegation of sarpanches who
travelled to Delhi last week. The Congress General Secretary Gandhi always
argued for more powers to panchayats.
On Thursday, he will visit the Ladakh region and hold public
rallies in Leh and Kargil town, after which he will attend the foundation stone
laying ceremony of the Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, that will connect Kashmir
with Ladakh Srinagar. Rahul Gandhi will then meet members of the Jammu &
Kashmir NSUI and address the ongoing meeting of the Youth Congress National
Executive in Srinagar.
