Congress President Sonia Gandhi during her rally in connection with West Bengal Assembly elections in April highlighted pro-poor schemes launched by the Congress-led UPA government. She said that so much of funds were given to the states by UPA government as no government in the past had done. Congress President said that the amount of work done by the Congress-led government at the Centre for all sections of society had not been matched by any non-Congress government in the past. Sonia Gandhi stated that some districts in West Bengal were among the most backward in the country. Many places in the state lacked proper irrigation facilities and worst one-third of the people had no access to drinking water, she said. Congress President said that the state government was discriminating in implementing developmental schemes in the areas where Congress was strong. If the Central funds had been properly used in Bengal, the situation would not have been so pathetic, Sonia Gandhi said. This was the reason why that the people of West Bengal ultimately voted out the Leftist government and brought in the government supported by the Congress-Trinamool alliance.
