We learn from him a lot always," said Rahul Gandhi. "I am very happy that he would be the President of India," said the Congress General Secretary.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC), highest decision making body of the party, on Monday convened a special meeting to bid a formal farewell to Pranab Mukherjee.
After the meeting, Mukherjee told reporters: "Today my long association with the Congress Working Committee since 1978 came to an end. I met the Prime Minister. Tomorrow I will be putting in my paper as finance minister."

Rahul Gandhi calls on Pranab

On a day Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi described him as the most deserving candidate for Rashtrapati Bhavan and Manmohan Singh said the government would miss his experience, Rahul Gandhi had a separate meeting with Pranab Mukherjee.

Rahul Gandhi called on Mukherjee at his North Block office in the finance ministry. “We learnt a lot from him,” said the young Congress MP after the meeting. Rahul Gandhi also said “it was a matter of great pleasure that Pranabda is going to become the President of the country”.

Congress sources said the meeting that lasted over an hour would have been used to discuss vital party and government issues, as Mukherjee would resign from the ministry tomorrow and from the party before filing his nomination for the President’s post on June 28.

Rahul Gandhi’s meeting took place on Monday afternoon, soon after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) had felicitated Mukherjee at 10 Janpath, Sonia’s official residence. The CWC had no agenda other than bidding farewell to its oldest member.

Sonia Gandhi spoke first at the meeting, hailing Mukherjee’s political career and personal virtues and hoping that he would enhance India’s prestige as President. The Congress President expressed happiness that Mukherjee was a candidate of the UPA, not the Congress alone, and expressed gratitude to the rival parties that have extended support to him.

Sonia Gandhi described Mukherjee as “a very able and deserving candidate” and said the widespread support he has received was because of his “personal qualities”.

Mukherjee spoke in the end, gracefully conceding that the Congress had given him much more than he could give to the party. He expressed satisfaction at his long association with the Congress and said he was indebted to leaders like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi who trusted him and gave him such crucial responsibilities. He also thanked Manmohan Singh for having faith in him.

Rahul Gandhi at IIIT Amethi: IT has a role to play to ensure connectivity

Congress General Secretary and MP from Amethi Rahul Gandhi while speaking at the occasion of the convocation ceremony at IIIT Amethi and said that it should be our mission to ensure connectivity among the people of our country.
Rahul Gandhi said “So what is your role as IT practitioners? I asked many of your friends and most of them told that they would like to do jobs. What you do not realize is that while you are doing jobs, you are building the bridge that is going to connect these two Indias. Some of you would be more interested in your jobs and may not be much interested about what is happening in the country. But while you are doing your job, while developing software or any other IT products, while working on computers, without knowing it, you are building that bridge. There may be people who are taking special interest in the national affairs. And they may be doing works in that regard apart from their job. Anyhow, you have already started the process of connecting our nation and I want to thank you for that,” commented Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi at IIIT Amethi: Question yourself to gather more knowledge

Congress General Secretary and MP from Amethi Rahul Gandhi spoke at the occasion of the convocation ceremony at IIIT Amethi and said that one should question yourself to gather more knowledge.
“I had mentioned that there was a time I was sitting where you are sitting now. When I was sitting there I thought that I have the answers for all the questions. But later I knew that that is not the fact. I am very passionate about my ideas. Even today I am very passionate. Now I realise that the most important thing one should do is to question one’s ideas. I found it in my life that when I am most certain about something, when I am hundred percent sure that this is the way to do it, very soon I find that I was wrong and there is actually another way to do it and a better way”.

Rahul Gandhi at IIIT Amethi: Knowledge is created by the destruction of knowledge

“Knowledge is created by the destruction of knowledge” said Rahul Gandhi while speaking at a convocation ceremony at IIIT Amethi. “In order to question one self, one has to listen to him first because once you do not listen to others, you cannot question yourself”.
“There were a lot of things in my mind which I thought were correct were destroyed now and I no more believe in those. Those were replaced by new ideas and I am absolutely certain that some of the ideas which I had today may get destroyed tomorrow. And that is a good thing because none of us are god. We do not have eternal knowledge or eternal understanding. Life is moving forward and constantly questioning your ideas and thoughts.” added the Congress leader.

Rahul Gandhi: IT has a role to ensure connectivity

Congress General Secretary and MP from Amethi Rahul Gandhi while addressing the convocation ceremony at IIIT Amethi talked about the importance to ensure connectivity among entire people in the country. “There are two India as of now. One is connected and prosperous one and the other is the poor and unconnected. We should think about this and should connect the unconnected part to the prosperous part” said the young Congress leader. Rahul Gandhi asserted that it should be our mission to ensure connectivity among the people of our country.

Rahul Gandhi said “So what is your role as IT practitioners? I asked many of your friends and most of them told that they would like to do jobs. What you do not realize is that while you are doing jobs, you are building the bridge that is going to connect these two Indias”.

“Many of you would be more interested in your jobs and may not be much interested about what is happening in the country. But while you are doing your job, while developing software and while working on computers, without knowing it, you are building that bridge” reminded Rahul Gandhi.

“There may be people who are taking special interest in the national affairs. And they may be doing works in that regard apart from their job. Anyhow, you have already started the process of connecting our nation and I want to thank you for that,” said the Congress General Secretary to the students who acknowledged it with round applauds.

Rahul Gandhi at IIIT Amethi: Knowledge resides closest to the problem

Congress General Secretary and MP from Amethi Rahul Gandhi spoke at the occasion of the convocation ceremony at IIT Amethi and said that the knowledge resides closest to where the problem is.
“So my humble request to you students is that when you are absolutely sure about something, you please question yourself because you may be probably wrong. The other thing I want to tell you about the nature of knowledge. In India this is the big problem” said Rahul Gandhi.
“I could fortunately travel many places across the country and meet a lot of people. So I see multiple perspectives. I could very early found, before talking to poor persons, farmers, other sections, engineers, doctors, that every one’s point of view is important” added the Congress leader.
“You may be good at IT but if you go to a farmer he can tell you much about farming. Knowledge resides closest to where the problem is. So if you are a farmer, you will be having the better knowledge about the farmers. Same is the case with IT. Generally what could see is that the more you are closer towards the problem, you will have better knowledge about that problem” said Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi at IIIT Amethi: To gather knowledge, go towards the problem

Congress General Secretary and MP from Amethi Rahul Gandhi spoke at the occasion of the convocation ceremony at IIT Amethi and said that to gather more knowledge one should move more close towards the problem.
Rahul Gandhi said “So the first thing I told you was to question yourself. And the second thing is that to gather knowledge, go towards the problem. That is what I did experience. When I go to a poor person’s house and asks about the things he does, I get the knowledge. So I realize that he knows better than me about his nature of job. So it is very important to respect the person’s views who is much closer to the problem”.
“In order to respect the person’s views who is much closer to the problem, you will have to give equal status to that person. There is a feeling among the politicians in India that they are the most knowledgeable persons. Understanding the knowledge is built on the destruction of the knowledge. In our ancient scripts there is a trinity- creator, preserver and destroyer. There is a reason behind it. You cannot have creation without destruction. You cannot have destruction without creation. And you cannot have either of these two without preservation” added the young Congress MP.
“And that is the same with knowledge. To get the current knowledge you will have to destroy the existing knowledge. To destroy the existing knowledge you will have to question yourself. You will have to learn to question yourself and question the persons around you. The more you do that the more knowledgeable you will become” concluded Rahul Gandhi.

People see Maya, Mulayam only during elections: Rahul Gandhi

Slamming non-Congress leaders like Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati for neither meeting the people nor sharing their concerns much less addressing their issues during their tenure in office, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had said, “It is a shame that these leaders were seen touring the state only during elections, when they come, make tall promises and deliver loud speeches, only to shut their doors on the common people once they have got installed as chief ministers.” These leaders never bothered about the people even once during those years; they preferred to sit with the rich business men and deal fixers to attend to their needs in turn for hefty money, said Rahul Gandhi while addressing public meetings in Uttar Pradesh for the recently held Assembly elections. What these non-Congress leaders have done for you during the last twenty two years, asked Rahul Gandhi. Mulayam rode the Cycle but punctured the hopes of the people. Then Mayawati came. Her elephant ate all the public money while the people got nothing. That explains why UP failed to make progress during the last 22 years, he added. Reminding the people that these leaders have been offering them only rosy hopes, Rahul Gandhi urged them this time to vote for Congress (I) and promised that his party would put in place a system which would ensure that the benefits of the welfare schemes reach them and fast track development of the state takes place.

Mayawati even cheated poor women belonging to BPL category: Rahul Gandhi

Lashing out against Mayawati for looting welfare funds meant for the poor, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had said that Mayawati government looted money meant for welfare of poor women belonging to BPL category. Mayawati failed to protect even the interests of poor women for whom Congress led center has sent a number of social welfare and health care schemes, said the Congress leader while campaigning for the recently held UP Assembly elections. Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is one such scheme under National Rural Health Mission. The scheme is meant to encourage institutional delivery of pregnant women. For this Rs 1400 are given to each woman in cash as incentive plus around to Rs. 2,000 to ASHA worker who assist the pregnant woman. But even in this scheme there is scam of Rs 28 crore. For instance in one case a women is shown to have delivered twice in five months. On scrutiny it was found second delivery was bogus. Most bizarre case came to notice in Allahabad district where 619 unmarried girls were shown to have delivered and amount was fraudulently claimed in their names. Highlighting that Mayawati was really not concerned in the welfare of the poor, Rahul Gandhi promised that Congress (I) would ensure that the welfare schemes reach the poor.

Congress hopes Rahul Gandhi’s visit will boost its workers in Karnataka

The Congress unit in the state of Karnataka feels that the Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi‘s two-day visit to Karnataka would give a fillip to the sagging spirits of the party, which is trying to cash in on infighting in the ruling BJP.

Rahul Gandhi addressed a meeting of the Youth Congress’ national executive and also attended a meeting in Davangere with the heads of district Congress committees and block presidents.

“The Congress hopes Rahul’s visit will give the much needed impetus to strengthen the party organisation,” said a Youth Congress leader.

BJP in Karnataka is facing tough times with party strongman and Lingayat leader BS Yeddyurappa challenging the national leadership for not reinstating him as chief minister after being asked to relinquish his post following his indictment in the Lokayukta report on illegal mining in July last year.

Congress hopes to cash in on the internal bickerings in BJP and come back to power next year when assembly elections are due.

The Congress had won the recent Chikmagalur-Udupi Lok Sabha bypoll, where its candidate Jayaprakash Hegde got elected. His victory for the seat, vacated by Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda, has bolstered Congress’ ambition to come back to power.

Last month AICC President Sonia Gandhi had visited Tumkur and met Shivakumara Swami of Siddhaganga Mutt, who commands influence among Lingayats.
