Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi explained the usefulness and effectiveness of the MGNREGA during his addresses at various places in Uttar Pradesh as part of his five-day tour to the state. He said that the amount which every rural person should get under the scheme goes to the pockets of the bureaucrats, officers and middlemen.
“We brought the MGNREGA. In the MGNREGA, there is provision of guaranteeing 100 days employment which means Rs. 12000 in a year. Where does the money go? It goes to the middleman, to the officers.”
He told the people there how the Mayawati government refused to accept the social welfare scheme and said that it was “not needed”. But, Rahul accepted the Act has not been successful in UP because of corruption.
“I went to the state’s Mayawati government proposing the law. The Chief Minister said it is not required in UP. Go wherever you want and ask the poor, they will answer till date no other social-welfare has been launched such as the MGNREGA. But if you ask someone in UP, they will say it hasn’t worked. It’s true there are no benefits out of it in UP.”
“Janani Surakhsha Yojna provides Rs. 1400 to (child bearing) woman. What happened? The money got siphoned off in the middle. In UP, woman gives birth to child every week. Rs. 6,000 crore was given to wave farmers’ debt. Future is yours, the poor’s.”
