Mayawati’s elephant gobbled up MNREGA funds in U.P: Rahul Gandhi

Lambasting Mayawati government for rampant corruption, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said a magical elephant in Lucknow was eating up central funds meant for the poor. Addressing an election rally in Sitapur, Congress (I) leader said, “This 'jaado ka haathi' (magical elephant) is eating the central funds released for the benefit of poor people of Uttar Pradesh.” Elephant is election symbol of Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party. He pointed out that in view of acute unemployment situation Congress (I)-led UPA government launched ambitious Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGEA) as poverty alleviation program to provide employment to poor. A massive amount of Rs 60,000 crore was released. But major portion of this money disappeared instead of reaching the poor. Taking a dig at Mayawati for saying that MNREGA did not benefit the poor, Rahul Gandhi said, “The chief minister is correct when she says that it has not benefited the poor because she swindled the major portion of the fund.”
