Flaying Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav for ruling the state by putting out empty promises to the people, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said that these leaders resisted welfare schemes like MNREGA which are meant to help the poor to earn their livelihood. While SP Supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav refused to implement this scheme, BSP Supremo Mayawati said the scheme will not be useful to the poor and made away with the funds meant for the poor, said Rahul Gandhi while addressing a public meeting in Mainpuri. It is ironical that now at election time the same Mulayam is promising unemployment allowance to the youth, he added. Mayawati government kept looting MNREGA money instead of providing employment to the poor.
The central sponsored MNREGA scheme ensures jobs to the poor for minimum of 100 days @ Rs 120/- in their own villages thus providing minimum income of Rs 12,000/- to each person, said Rahul Gandhi. MNREGA has given employment, income and respectable social status to the poor, he further said. This scheme has helped millions in Congress (I) ruled states while it has faltered in UP due to corruption in Mayawati government. Highlighting that Congress (I) is pro-people and welfare-oriented Party, Rahul Gandhi urged the people to put his party in the government this time. He assured that a government of the poor by Congress (I) would work for their welfare and ensure that the benefits of the welfare schemes reach them.
