New Delhi: Congress General
Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday raised the issue of the security of the
panchayat members as well as lack of power due to the refusal of the Jammu and Kashmir government to extend 73rd and 74th
Constitutional amendments to the state, even as elected panchayat members
continued their mass resignations across Kashmir.
Rahul highlighted the problem at the Congress Working
Committee (CWC) meeting in New Delhi, when general secretary Gulchain Singh
Charak, hailing from Jammu, raised the issue of killing of panchayat members
and asked Congress leaders to take note of the situation.
Intervening after Charak’s speech, Rahul Gandhi asked for
strengthening the governance at grass-root levels. “We should not allow the
dream to go sour,” sources quoted him telling the CWC members.. Rahul Gandhi
later left for Ranchi
on a two-day visit to the state to rejuvenate the party. The Congress MP will
interact with Congress leaders and workers in the state.
