Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard called on Congress
Party President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi
in New Delhi as part of her official visit to India. Gillard reportedly
discussed ways to improve bilateral ties between the two countries.
Congress party leader Karan Singh and Commerce Minister
Anand Sharma also took part in the discussions Gillard and Sonia Gandhi.
Gillard's visit has been significant as the main issue has
been the prospects of Australia supplying uranium to India that had been
stalled for quite some time now. Australia had earlier refused to sell nuclear
material to India because it had not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty (NPT).
However, Gillard had been pushing to overturn the ban,
removing a diplomatic thorn between the two countries and potentially opening
up a new and growing market for Australian suppliers.
