Congress President and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi today presented the 26th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration to veteran social activist and former union minister Mohan Dharia. The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also attended the function.
The 86-year-old Padma Vibhushan awardee, an environmentalist and lawyer who currently runs the Vanrai NGO in Pune, was selected for the 2010 award, which carries a citation and cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh. The award was presented by Congress President Sonia Gandhi today on October 31, the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh paid floral tribute to Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Delivering the welcome address, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi said “This is one of the prestigious awards in the country”.
Remembering Indira Gandhi Sonia Gandhi said that Indira Gandhi always gave importance to the principles she believed than her life. And she sacrificed her life for the nation added Sonia Gandhi. Even her opponents admitted that Indira Gandhi never compromised her principle at any cost, recalled the Congress President. Mohan Dharia is also amongst the persons who always respected and appreciated Indira Gandhi, she said.
Every citizen of our country has the responsibility to work for the national integration and unity reminded Sonia Gandhi. There may be differences in our political thoughts and ideology but the nation is ours and national integration is supreme asserted UPA chairperson. Only because of the persons who considered the nation as the most important factor in their lives, we could achieve freedom added Sonia Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi and Indira Gandhi had to sacrifice their lives for the country, she remembered. The Indira Gandhi Award is therefore given to the persons who considered national integrity as the foremost thing. Sonia Gandhi also appreciated the services of Mohan Dharia for his sincere and dedicated service for the nation as well as for the society and also emphasized that his efforts strengthened the process of National integration.

The Congress achievements in the economic field confirm that the BJP government does not qualify to handle delicate subject of national economy. First, they have never been clear about their goals and objectives or their commitments to the reforms. Unlike the Congress, the BJP had neither the heritage of modernizing India, nor of championing the all round progress of the economy that benefited all cross-sections of our people. Whenever the Congress introduced reforms BJP leaders were most vociferous in their opposition to the reforms. They could not appreciate the initiation of reforms in 1980s under Indiraji, who sought the fulfillment of her vision for Garibi Hatao in the country’s overall growth. Nor could they appreciate Rajivji’s vision for 21st century India. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s efforts for modernization for India to become a truly global player, while at the same time spreading the benefits to the grassroots through Panchayti Raj was never thought of by the BJP. Through their actions the BJP government has showed clearly that they had no idea of an appropriate design of reforms.

Vikramaditya Singh, son of Union Minister VB Singh entered politics by filing the nominations for the post of president of Himachal unit of Youth Congress on Monday.22-year old Vikramaditya, doing Bachelor’s degree in Law in Delhi, had earlier floated an organisation to promote sports.
While talking to media persons after filing the nominations, he said it was a "friendly match" as all the contestants belong to Youth Congress but he was sure of his success. Vikramaditya said he would start his campaign from Kotkhai and cover the entire state before the polling, if held. He said "it hardly matters who wins as the runners-up would automatically become the vice president and both would work as a team to ensure that Congress returns to power in the state".

He along with Union Minister Pradeep Jain raided the godown to ascertain the situation. The villagers had complained that there are shortage for fertilizers and seeds and they also complained about black marketing. Rahul Gandhi therefore made a surprise visit to the godown to ascertain the situation. He also met the senior officials in connection with the complaints along with the villagers and appraised them the situation.

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to Amethi on 20th October, 2011, inaugurated a branch of Corporation bank in Amethi. In a function organized at Ramlila Maidan Rahul Gandhi said that unless the poor people including dalits, adivasis and farmers are not ensured the facility of banking, our country would not progress. “Now there are a lot of facilities in the banks like mobile banking. And many dalits and poor people are staying in villages. Unless these people are connected with the banks we cannot achieve development” said Rahul Gandhi. He expressed his happiness to know that the people who cannot sign could use the thumb impression and avail banking services.
He also hinted that some of the state Governments are not using the Central funds effectively. “Centre has been sending huge amounts under various schemes like MGNREGA and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to the states but these funds are not reaching the poor in the required manner” said Rahul Gandhi. We have been trying to change this, he added. Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi also mentioned about the Aadhar UID card scheme. “Every citizen of this country will have an identity card as a proof of their existence by the Aadhar scheme. Further the card will include the Bank account number along with the Aadhar Card Number so as to ensure connectivity and transparency and with this the Central funds will directly reach the account holder.” said Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi also recalled the statement of Rajiv Gandhi that when centre sanctions one rupee for the poor only 15 paisa reaches them. He also expressed hope that the new card will help to remove the issues related to BPL card distribution.
Rahul Gandhi also asserted that UPA Government is committed to serve the poor. Only with this intention we made policies like MGNREGA and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. We are in the process of drafting a Food Security Bill too, quipped Rahul Gandhi. He concluded his speech by thanking all the people assembled and also expressed his gratitude to Corporation Bank officials for their support and cooperation.

Anna’s recent utterances have overtone of partisan politician: Congress
It had so far been claimed that Anna Hazare was a social activist who had nothing to do with politics. But recently same Hazare has announced that he will ask people not to support Congress. This is unfortunate and unworthy for a man of his stature said a Congress press relase. It brings him down from the Gandhian perch of moral superiority that he had sought to occupy, and places him squarely in the midst of politics added Congress. Anna Hazare's threat would mean, willy nilly, effective support for the main opposition party, the BJP. It removes the aura of a non-partisan, 'not aligned to any party' campaign that his efforts and fasts lay claim to, or at least sought to acquire. In fact Anna’s insistence that Lokpal Bill must be passed by winter session itself does not seem to be correct. There is a general perception that his methods and demands also tantamount to challenging, even undermining, the supremacy of Parliament.

Country and its people are shocked by BP leaders’ absolute commitment to violation of constitutional principle. Convention and ethical practices continue to be violated by them. Recently the Joint Parliamentary Committee – an entity which is supposed to be a Judge, an evaluator and an adjudicator also of similar issues including telecom issues gave advance findings, opinions, conclusions and views in press conferences. Vituperative language was used by Yashwant Sinha, member of JPC, against the Home Minister and the then Finance Minister. BJP and its leader conveniently forgot about role in such matters of Pramod Mahajan and Arun Shourie. Congress Party call upon the CBI and the JPC that they should publish at least an interim report on these two Telecom Ministers for their relevant respective periods and why the CBI has not yet given those reports. Sinha is guilty of using vituperative language and of gross politicization of an issue which should never be done in the glorious traditions which Congress established on joint parliamentary committees.

It is time the BJP and other sections of the opposition introspect. Are they irresponsible opposition or are they indulging in competitive politics within themselves as far as politics and party are concerned and sensationalism as far as public is concerned. They made a demand for a statement from the Prime Minister. They made a huge amount of ‘hulla-gulla’ on something like WikiLeaks. They demanded for privileges. But at the same time kept the Parliament stalled. This proves how irresponsible the opposition is – an opposition which is trying to score points within itself. It is individual person based competitive politics. On these issues, which they think are important, Congress doesn’t believe the public thinks, the country thinks. They are not ‘aam-aadmi’ issues, they are not healing touch issues, and they are not development issues. But on these issues, they disrupted parliament, they indulged in shouting and slanging matches, and they even tried to postpone important discussions like the Finance Bill.
