Having been extremely successful in mobilising the farmers, labourers and artisans of Western UP about their rights and against the land grabbing policy of the Mayawati government, the Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi is now visiting Purvanchal to highlight the problems of the people there.
On the first leg of his two days visit to Purvanchal, he reached Gorakhpur on July 21. He called upon the youth to work hard to revive Congress in Uttar Pradesh and get the state rid of the alleged "misrule" of the Mayawati-led BSP government.
While addressing a meeting of the party's youth brigade at Syed Modi Railway Stadium, he urged the youth to come forward to educate the masses about the centre's "people-oriented policies and programmes". He asked the youth members of the party to expose the "anti-people and anti-farmer policies" of the state government. He added that one after another big scams were taking place in the state.
He targeted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for the irregularities in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and said that if a scam of this proportion would have happened in Delhi or Maharashtra then the government there would have fallen.
Uttar Pradesh government stand cornered over the NRHM scam as it was miserably exposed on the multiple controversies surrounding the land acquisition policy of the state.
Central team that reviewed the implementation of NRHM in UP and found a number of irregularities. The most glaring was in the purchase of 779 ambulances at a cost of Rs 54.56 crore last year but as many as 620 of these vehicles were lying unused in the stores.
The other irregularities pertained to the buying of medicines. It was found that these were purchased at phenomenal high rates, causing an estimated loss of over Rs five crore.

During his visit Rahul Gandhi is promoting the membership drive of the Youth Congress in the state. He is also interacting with the youth members of the party.
He is meeting Youth Congress leaders of nine Lok Sabha constituencies of Gorakhpur and Basti district.
From Gorakhpur Congress general secretary proceeded to Mau. He will visit Ballia and Varanasi on July 22 to promote membership drive there.
During his visit to Gorakhpur, UPCC Chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi and other leaders were also present.
