Latest news - Sonia Gandhi and PM visit victims of Mumbai serial blasts

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi have asked the entire country to come together to fight the menace of terror. Seeking cooperation from all, both visited Mumbai on July 14, which was rocked by serial blasts the previous day and met the injured victims. They also gave a healing touch to Mumbaikars.

Both of them arrived at Saifee Hospital at 8.30 pm along with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, and moved from floor to floor where victims of the serial blasts were being given treatment. They were at the hospital for 25 minutes. They later visited JJ Hospital where other victims are being treated.

The Prime Minister said, “I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their dear ones and I pray for them." He assured that the government would do everything in its power to prevent such attacks in the future. "They must be brought to justice quickly and be subjected to the rule of law that they have sought to subvert. I seek the cooperation of all citizens in this effort. We owe this to the grieving families," he added.

Singh appreciated the efforts of the administration in that it had risen remarkably well after the blasts. "There has been a remarkable coordination of efforts." he said. The Prime Minister added that he was in Mumbai to share the deep sorrow of the people.
13/7 got added to Mumbai's tragic terror calendar when three serial blasts ripped through Mumbai in which eighteen persons were killed and 131 injured. The perpetrators of the crime have not yet been traced.
A hazy picture is gradually emerging on how the blasts took place - sophisticated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were used; they were triggered by alarms set on cellphones. No sim cards have been found at the locations of the blasts.
The persons responsible for the blasts seemed to be intimately familiar with Mumbai's commercial areas. They even knew how to use the monsoon to their advantage as the CCTV footage from Zaveri Bazaar is full of people walking with umbrellas during rain thereby rendering recognition of faces difficult.
"I cannot find words to condemn the barbaric acts of terror that resulted in the senseless killing and injuring of innocent people in Mumbai yesterday.” Manmohan Singh said.
He said the need now was to look after the medical and other immediate needs of the families of the victims and survivors.
"I have asked the state government to ensure that all support is provided so that these families can overcome the tragedy and rebuild their lives,” he said.
In the final analysis, it is the unity and strength of the people that will defeat these efforts to divide our people and destroy our civilized way of life,"
The prime minister also reviewed the security situation in the state in a meeting at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport soon after his arrival.
