Latest news - Rahul Gandhi visits Lakhimpur-Kheri and meets parents of dead rape victim

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi visited Lakhimpur-Kheri today and met parents of 14-year-old minor girl named Sonam who was found hanging from a tree in the compound of Nighasan Police Station on June 10.
Rahul Gandhi remained with the grieved parents for sometime and offered his condolence to the parents of the murdered minor girl. The mother of the dead girl also met the Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi. He also inspected the place of the crime. Rahul Gandhi said, “It is shameful that innocent child was killed in the police station; in these circumstances there is no hope for justice from the Mayawati government.”
The girl had walked into the police station as the cattle she was grazing had strayed into the police station compound. A number of policemen committed heinous crime of rape on the minor girl and hanged her body from a tree to give an appearance that she had committed suicide.
When the girl did not return home, her mother searched for her daughter and found her body hanging from a tree in the compound of the Nighasan Police Station. To screen their crime, police manipulated the post mortem report which mentioned the cause of death as suicide. When the political parties and media raised hue and cry the body was exhumed and second post mortem was conducted which confirmed that rape was committed. The concerned policemen including SP of the area were suspended.
The Congress party has been demanding CBI probe into the heinous crime in which state police is involved. However, Mayawati the Chief Minister and BSP Chief has no agreed for CBI probe on the strange excuse that CBI might mess it up as it happened in Arushi Talwar’s case in Noida.
High Court Alllahabad has taken a suo motto cognizance of the case and monitoring it investigation. National Commission for Human Rights and National Commission for Schedule Caste have also called for a report from the Uttar Pradesh government in the matter.
Recently there has been unprecedented spurt in the cases of rape of girls and women and murders. Three doctors, two Chief Medical Offices and one Dy CMO have been murdered in Lucknow who were dealing with National Rural Health Mission funds for implementation of health programmes in UP. It is strongly suspected that nexus between drug mafia and state government officials coupled with large scale irregularities in the funds made available by the Central government was the real motive behind these killings.
The way incidents of serious crimes are happening in the state one after the other day after day, it appears that the Mayawati government has lost control over its police and state officials. People are feeling insecure while the state government seems to ignore the crime cases as routine incidents.
The incident of Lakhimpur-Kheri would have never come to notice had the UP State Congress unit and the media not brought it to the notice of the nation. It is common saying in UP that Chief Minister is more concerned about keeping the police and state officials under her thumb rather than ensuring good governance for the common people of the Uttar Pradesh.
It is expected that with the visit of Rahul Gandhi to Lakhimpur-Kheri the demand for CBI probe into the rape and murder incident of minor girl by the police men will gather force.
