Congress (I)-led UPA government launched Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act scheme for providing guaranteed employment for minimum 100 days to those living below poverty line in rural areas. It is a welfare scheme and puts money directly in the pocket of poor people, said Congress (I). Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi also had lashed out at Mayawati Govt. for the misuse of central funds. Rahul Gandhi while addressing various public meetings promised that a Congress Government will bring changes in Uttar Pradesh. While the scheme is a roaring success in Congress (I) ruled states like Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh has been stealing NREGA funds instead of spending on the poor people. Seventeen Rural Development officers have been charge sheeted for financial irregularities in NREGA funds. District officer has passed orders for recovery of embezzled amount from those officials. Five village pradhans are facing charges for misappropriation of NREGA money. Congress (I) has highlighted that a PIL is pending in Allahabad High Court for a scam of Rs 400 cores in NREGA funds in 18 districts of Allahabad, Gorakhpur and Lucknow region.
