Coming down hard on Mayawati and her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP for indulging in corruption, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has accused her of ignoring poor people who kept looking expectantly at the her government but did not get any relief. BSP ministers had heydays while poor starved in her regime, said Rahul Gandhi during election meeting for the ongoing Assembly elections. Once in power Mayawati shunned the poor and did not meet them to know their problems. What welfare she would have done for the poor then, Rahul Gandhi asked the audience. Referring to his visits to villages and houses of the poor, Rahul Gandhi said they gave an idea that poor were interested in job near their houses only. Thus, Congress-led UPA government brought MGNREGA scheme with Rs 60,000 crore for providing jobs to poor. But Mayawati called it as unnecessary and swindled the money instead of providing job to the poor, he said. Another scheme NRHM with Rs 10,000 crore was started to provide proper medicare to the poor but Mayawati’s ministers siphoned off the funds. Bundelkhand package of Rs 8,000 crore disappeared the same way. Highlighting that there was need to reverse the bad situation, Rahul Gandhi urged the people to vote for Congress (I). He assured that a government committed to serve the poor by the Congress (I) will be responsive to the needs of the people and ensure that the benefits of the welfare schemes reach the poor.
